Intertextuality is a literary phenomenon the importance of which seems to be still underestimated in the New Testament scholarship. However, without detection and identification of references to the earlier texts, it is impossible to interpret the New Testament text correctly. The course will consist on philological analysis of selected New Testament fragments in terms of references to the Old Testament texts and earlier pagan literature. |

Intertextuality, i.e. the study of the presence of one text in another text, is a literary phenomenon the importance of which seems still underestimated by New Testament scholars. Many still believe that the proper meaning of the text is limited to the surface text. However, without finding references not only to the Old Testament but also to earlier pagan literature, it is impossible to interpret the New Testament properly according to author’s intention (intentio auctoris). The course will consist on studying selected fragments of the New Testament in terms of existing references to earlier texts, both from Old Testament and pagan literature. The following New Testaments texts will be inter alia explored: - The Infancy Narratives (Matthew and Luke) - The Wedding in Cana of Galilee (John) - Paul’s Arepagus Speech (Acts) - Selected passages from Pauline epistles |

| Efekty uczenia się: |
The student knows the basic facts about New Testament intertextuality. He/she is able to discuss analyzed New Testament texts in English. The student is capable of formulating his/her own interpretive ideas on passages under discussion. |
| Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
Participation in discussions (50%), essay (50%). |
